Brighton Buccaneers U11 vs Maidenhead U11 | Match Report

Curtain Raiser - Saturday 1st March

On a bright and fresh afternoon at Waterhall, the stage was set for an exciting encounter between the U11 Brighton Buccaneers and Maidenhead, serving as the perfect curtain-raiser before Brighton’s crucial 1st XV league clash. With the crowd gathering and spirits high, the young Buccaneers were eager to showcase their skills against strong opposition from outside the county.

Maidenhead arrived well-prepared, and the size of some of Brighton’s players quickly signaled the physical battle ahead. The match was played in three 16-minute segments, with Maidenhead’s 1st XV providing their young players with a guard of honor before kickoff.

The Buccaneers struck early, moving the ball wide to score the opening try. This was quickly followed by another, thanks to some elusive footwork. However, despite their lead, Brighton found themselves struggling at the breakdown, allowing Maidenhead to force turnovers and apply pressure. Their persistence paid off, as they scored before halftime to cut the deficit.

A halftime adjustment saw Brighton focus on increasing intensity at the breakdown, and the impact was immediate. Improved ball security and straight running led to further tries, while their defensive resilience ensured Maidenhead didn’t cross the line again.

Game 2 followed a similar pattern, with Brighton’s improved structure allowing them to control possession and capitalize on attacking opportunities. Maidenhead had their moments, but Brighton’s defensive effort, including some brilliant cover tackles, prevented any breakthroughs.

In the final game, the emphasis was on fluid ball movement and smart decision-making in contact. The Buccaneers responded brilliantly, producing well-worked team tries through sharp footwork and passing. Maidenhead remained determined, and despite being held up over the line just before halftime, they never backed down. The closing stages saw both teams pushing to entertain, with Brighton taking their chances while Maidenhead was unlucky not to add to their tally.

Post-match, the players enjoyed well-earned refreshments before welcoming both senior teams onto the field. A big thank you to Maidenhead for a competitive and spirited contest. Brighton continues to develop well, and with more work on game structure and decision-making, they are in a great position for the festival season ahead.

We go again—Go Buccs!
